DAYBREAKER of the MONTH: Sarah L and Ray

Meet Sarah L and Ray!

Sarah L and Ray both joined Daybreak in December and have forces at the night classes. Their good spirits and solid work ethic are certainly contagious to all around them.

Sarah isn’t a stranger to weightlifting. In high school Sarah was a power lifter and could deadlift 600 pounds! Sarah consistently attends Barbell Club has pr’d her clean and jerk and continuously makes technique gains on her snatch. What’s more impressive is along with her strength and technique gains, Sarah has also made significant improvements on her bodyweight movements. She’s moved from green to a blue banded pull ups, and went from not being able to do a handstand to now doing handstand push ups to 2 abmats.

In January, Ray participated in our nutrition challenge and lost more than ten pounds. He’s maintained his nutrition regime and can now do consecutive pull ups, chest to bar pull ups and handstand push ups. Ray came to Daybreak with incredible upper body strength and in the past months he’s focused on his legs, adopting a squat cycle into his weekly routine, and is killing his workouts.

About Sarah L

I live in Lincoln. I’m the Assistant Farmer for Crops at Drumlin Farm- I manage our farmer’s market, CSA, and sugaring programs and train farming apprentices. In college I studied environmental ethics and adventure education. I’ve been doing crossfit since January, so this is month 7. Usually attend one of the evening classes.
1. What keeps you coming back to CrossFit each day?
The jello feeling you get when you’ve done heavy lifting. And trying to beat my PRs.
2. What’s your spirit animal (an animal that represents you)?
Cheshire cat- we both smile a lot and have the tendency to unexpectedly enter or exit a room
3. What is your anti-job? The one thing you couldn’t picture yourself doing?
Anything involving make-up and/or a tucked in shirt
4. If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
Train for aerial acrobatics. Growing up I always wanted to be part of the circus and would spend hours doing flips on rings and a trapeze in the backyard. I still spend time daydreaming about it 🙂
5. Do you have a scar with an interesting story behind it? Or have you remained mostly unscathed?
While on a cycling trip in Thailand I got bit by a dog. The bite didn’t scar, but the shots I got for the rabies vaccine did. They form a triangle.

About Ray

I have been married my wife Sarah for two years and we just bought a house in Maynard in April.  We have two large cats.  I am a high school math teacher at Acton-Boxboro for 12 years now.  I started doing CrossFit in December.  I have been trying to go to the 5:30 class during the school year, but I have been going when ever I can this summer.
1. What keeps you coming back to CrossFit each day?
There are a few things that keep me coming back to Daybreak.  The first is easily the coaching.  Always knowing how hard to push me and giving the perfect advice. The second is the competition. I love the competition with my self and what I can do.  The community and how everyone routes for and pushes each other is huge for me, so thank you.
2. What’s your spirit animal (an animal that represents you)?
My spirit animal would have to be a bear.
3. What is your anti-job? The one thing you couldn’t picture yourself doing?
My anti job is anything where I would have to sit in a cube for 8 hours.
4. If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
I am practice for what I would do if I did not have to sleep.  I like to read, but I never get the time to, so I would probably read more.  I would also take more classes, some for work and some on anything.  I am a bit of a nerd, I like to learn new stuff.
5. Do you have a scar with an interesting story behind it? Or have you remained mostly unscathed?
I have lots of scars, but none major. I have one on the back of my head from falling off a stool when I was in elementary school and split my head open on a radiator.  I also have a scar on my left eyebrow from when I was 2 or 3.  I fell over reaching for a toy.  My head was too big so I fell over and  hit my eyebrow on the toy.
