DAYBREAKERS of the MONTH: Heather + Lisa

About Heather

I live in Sudbury with my husband Dave and 3 kids (Jacob -7.5, Nathaniel – 5, Anna – 2). I’m a mechanical/biomedical engineer, but have been trying out “retirement” since Anna was born. Some days it seems like a good decision, other days I’m checking in with my old co-workers to see if they have a job for me! I spent time working in the auto industry, footwear, and finally settled in at Boston Scientific working on medical devices. I started crossfit as a total skeptic about 4 years ago when I was working at Boston Scientific. As part of trying to convince us all that it was a wonderful place to work, they started offering free crossfit classes throughout the day. The pilot program was outside, during the summer and at lunch…I couldn’t pass that up! After a few months I finally realized I didn’t need to have “cardio” or “weight” days anymore and that I actually really loved the challenge of crossfit. After I “retired”, I missed doing crossfit and found the 8:30am crew at Daybreak.
1- What keeps you coming back to CrossFit each day?
I love the variety and new challenges. After having played volleyball for so long, and working out in order to stay in shape so I could still play, I got tired of doing my own thing. I love that I can show up to class, plan nothing, and get challenged in ways I would never do by myself.

2- Looking back on the last year, what accomplishment are you most proud of at the box?
I would love to say finally getting double unders, but since that hasn’t happened….getting my bar muscle ups.

3- Do you have a scar with an interesting story behind it? Or have you remained mostly unscathed?
If I answer this, I feel like I’ll jinx myself. My only scar is from when I was 8 and split my chin falling off the monkey bars.

4- What’s the most unusual/interesting place you’ve ever visited?
I love to travel, so I’ve been to some great places. But most unusual is probably China when I was working for Reebok, pretty sure I didn’t eat anything but granola bars the entire time I was there.

5- What’s your spirit animal (an animal that represents you)?
Ha. Not sure it “represents” me, but when I was a freshman in college one of the seniors on the volleyball team decided I looked like Timon from the movie “The Lion King”. I spent the next 4 years being called “Timon”. So I guess I should say “meerkat”?!

About Lisa

My husband Mark and I moved to Concord 2 years ago once I accepted the Director of Sales position at Concord’s Colonial Inn. We’ve been married for 34 years and have two daughters who are newly married and live in NYC and OKC. So, we are fairly new to being empty nesters.  We have an adorable bishon-poodle, Zoey, who is 12 years old.

1 – Tell us about your CrossFit journey so far, what have you learned about yourself, and what keeps you coming back?
When I moved to Concord I tried several gyms, but, I didn’t love any of them. When CrossFit opened nearby, it was the last gym option for me to try.  With an injured shoulder and having no flexibility and being over 50, I wasn’t sure if CrossFit was right for me. Long story short, I was not a natural, and it took some time for me to feel comfortable with the 15 pound bar.  Walking backwards up the wall for the first time was one of the scariest things for me to do!  I couldn’t even think about keeping track of my score.  I was just happy to finish the WOD.

Eventually I started getting the hang of it…I think.  I really look forward to the 5:30am class, as it’s ideal to jump-start my day. It gives me the energy I need to keep pace with my colleagues who are at least 25 years younger than me. The members of Daybreak CrossFit are always positive & happy to see each other, and no one judges you. They encourage you to do your best.  Erica & Mel and their staff are amazing, well-trained coaches who have made a big impact in my everyday world.

2 – Also, what is your favorite CrossFit moment so far?

One day I realized my shoulder didn’t have any pain or soreness. I was able to add on weight to the bar. It’s taken 3 years for my shoulder to heal, and I believe the CrossFit warm up stretches and WOD’s have been most instrumental in the healing process. My 2nd favorite CrossFit moment was when I did a double under! I was so excited because I never thought I would get it.

3 – What’s one of your guilty pleasures outside of Daybreak?

I really love Brigham’s Chocolate Chip Ice Cream!  At night, I enjoy sneaking a few bites especially when I need a sugar fix.
