DAYBREAKERS of the MONTH: Brett B + Scott C
Meet Brett and Scott!
There’s no secret sauce to Brett and Scott’s (aka Cornish) accomplishments. Both athletes work incredibly hard for their fitness gains. Their diligence and accomplishments are inspiring!
Brett since day one of CrossFit has asked how to better her weaknesses. She’ll pick one or two to work on, ask for guidance on how to work on them, and then gets after it! To get her handstand, Brett asked after almost every class for a coach to spot her until one day she had the confidence to do it herself. Now Brett is working on handstand push ups. This is exactly how she achieved kipping pull ups, rope climbs, heavier wall ball shots and a better nutrition regime. She asked for guidance from her coaches, she did exactly what was recommended and Brett is accomplishing her goals!
Scott took a hiatus from CrossFit after chronic back issues wouldn’t allow him to perform at the level he wanted to. When Scott was ready to come back, he asked for guidance and support, and listened to his coaches and his body despite maybe wanting to go heavier or faster. Scott is 7 months into CrossFit and his back is feeling great! Nonetheless his workouts are through the roof and he’s even thinking about competing!
About Brett
I live in Framingham with my husband, Eric (also at DCF), and our two children – Max who is 12 (and really likes the Teens class) and Rebecca who is 9. I am a literacy coach at McCarthy Elementary School in Framingham. In August, I will have been at Daybreak for 3 years. I always go to the 5:30 am class — even in the summer when I don’t have to get up. I’m a TOTAL morning person and the 5:30 am group grows on you! They are inspiring and so supportive.
What keeps you coming back to CrossFit each day?
I can’t imagine not coming to CrossFit. Most importantly, it’s given me a whole new way to think about my body and what it can do. I still can’t believe some of the things I have mastered over the past three years.
I’ve learned to be patient at DCF– sometimes I work on something for a long time and in my mind, I should be able to do it. However, by sticking with it, I’ve found that one day, it just clicks and my body starts doing exactly what I’ve been trying to do. The feeling of mastering something that I’ve worked on for a long time is so rewarding and definitely keeps me coming back to DCF.
Finally, I’ve learned the ups and downs of CrossFit. I have days that are so exciting and make me feel awesome and days that are frustrating and downright maddening. Even on the hard days, there’s always a group of people to cheer you on and encourage you. And on those hard days, I know I’m still getting better at whatever I’m doing and a good day is just around the corner.
What’s your spirit animal (an animal that represents you)?
I googled “animals that wake up early” and found out that LIONS “tend to wake up early with lots of energy” but “by early evening they’re exhausted.” Who knew? Guess I’m a lion.
What’s the hardest food/drink for you to give up on a nutrition challenge?
Definitely alcohol — especially the sunny afternoon we went to a beer garden and I had seltzer. It was also hard not to take tastes of my kids ice cream which I usually disguise as helping them clean up the drips!
What’s your guilty pleasure movie/TV show?
I LOVE taking my kids to horrible kids’ movies because as soon as the movie starts, I always fall asleep. They know not to wake me up unless there is blood or fire. I sleep so well – it’s worth the price of the movie ticket!
What’s your favorite song to blast and sing along to when you’re alone in your car?
About Scott
I live in Southboro with my wife Mariah and two dogs Troy (german shorthaired pointer) and Nicki (5 LB. Yorkshire terrier). I am the Construction Operations Manager at a Blade of Grass and have been doing CrossFit on and off for 6 years. I normally attend the 5:30p class although I would do a 4:30 a.m. if Mel ever offered one!
What keeps you coming back to CrossFit each day?
Amazing coaching and the community. I love doing a completely different workout every day. So much better than “Globo gym”
What’s your spirit animal (an animal that represents you)?
A bear.
What’s the hardest food/drink for you to give up on a nutrition challenge?
Sweets! I have an out of control sweet tooth. Dates are my savior
What’s your guilty pleasure movie/TV show?
Shameless! Funny show
What’s your favorite song to blast and sing along to when you’re alone in your car?
“You Don’t Want No Problem With Me” Chance the Rapper
