FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

If we made clients workout before they came to us, we’d have been out of business a long time ago. You see, getting (and keeping) you fit is our job. It’s why we’re here… and we’re pretty darn good at it. At Daybreak, no prior fitness level or athletic background is required. We’ll carefully introduce you to the workouts and we’ll modify them based on your abilities (and goals). We incorporate intensity and stimulus at pace that is right for you.

Oh no… not this again! The “I’m gonna get big” fallacy. To get big you have to lift heavy weight, and you have to lift it often. At Daybreak, we incorporate weights at levels and frequencies that promote fat-burning and lean muscle. Just because you see a barbell, it doesn’t mean we load it up. We’ll make you strong… we’ll make you look good… and most importantly, we’ll make you feel amazing!

CrossFit and other HIIT gyms have a bit of a bad reputation when it comes to “intensity”. Make no mistake, Daybreak’s style of group fitness is neither scream-in-your-face nor is it move-with-reckless-abandon. At Daybreak, our class energy is the motivator and we are hawks when it comes to teaching technique, consistency… and then, and only then, intensity at levels that are safe and appropriate for YOU!

Yes, it’s normal for many members to feel a little anxious, nervous or scared before starting. But once they’ve taken that first step (we won’t even call it a leap), they regret not starting sooner. At Daybreak, we make functional fitness, group classes and CrossFit very approachable. You’ll have coaches who will be right by your side. And our community is welcoming, inclusive and will make you feel like family!

Not all functional fitness gyms or CrossFits are created equal. Our style of fitness is very safe. We focus on quality and consistency of movement… not just volume and intensity. If you’re struggling or new to a certain movement, we substitute it, scale it or modify it. If you’re a little sore from yesterday’s workout or from a long day at the beach with your kids, we’ll tone down the workout for you. Our coaches go through constant training, education and feedback to ensure they’re qualified to guide you on your fitness journey.

Yes! We will develop the 10 general components of fitness; cardiovascular/muscular endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, speed, power, coordination, accuracy, agility and balance, providing a broader athletic base for you as an athlete. The mental adaptations from our program carry over to the competition field by being able to push when fatigued and break mental barriers. Our daily workouts are suitable for athletes in many disciplines.

Typically, we recommend a 3 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on, 1 day off cycle over the course of a week, but we know many of our members’ hectic schedules won’t permit a consistent routine. We will work with you to devise a personalized schedule that complements your busy life and delivers the results you want while allowing for sufficient rest and recovery.

We find most members start feeling and seeing a difference within 30-60 days of consistent attendance and proper nutrition. You’ll have more energy, you’re likely to lean out and you’ll simply feel better. After 60 days, we have seen weight reductions of up to 10-15 pounds, but it’s not always about weight. Lean muscle mass replaces soft fatty tissue and our members have dropped 2-4 dress or pant sizes without shedding a pound.

Our program makes you feel good by making you strong and capable… and THAT is how we like to measure success. But we’re not gonna lie… you’re going to like the way you look in a bathing suit, too.

Classes are 1-hour long. The first 15-20 minutes are dedicated to a warm up, skill review and customizations based on each member’s ability, experience, goals and any pre-existing conditions. The next 30-35 minutes are dedicated to variations of strength movements and a metabolic workout. Some days we focus on one. Sometimes on the other. Sometimes on both. The remaining time consists of tidying up, wiping down our equipment, and relishing with your classmates about a job well done. Visit our GETTING STARTED page to see how to prepare for and what to expect on your first visit.

Our workouts avoid overly-complex movements that may be risky to muscle or joint health. Instead we focus on movements that are used in everyday life. We deadlift (pick objects off the ground), squat (sit down and stand up), and press (put things above our head). When we lose the capacity to perform these movements we lose the capacity to live life outside the gym.

If your child is 13 or over, they can participate in our DAYBREAK TEENS program. If you have younger children who can be left unsupervised, they are welcome to relax in our WiFi-enabled lounge and watch you workout. Children are not allowed in the workout area at any time for their safety and the safety of our members. There is also a per-hour day care available next door in the Longfellow plaza (not affiliated with Daybreak).

Yes! Nutrition is the foundation of a successful fitness regime. Athletes who just exercise usually do not see the full benefit of exercise until their nutrition is dialed in. When the proper nutrition regime is executed, that’s when we see the greatest results in body composition, athletic performance, and just general well-being.
